Are 1970s mustangs good cars?

Any car that old may, or may not be reliable. Much depends on how it was looked after. Maintained or restored. The ones from the 60′s are far more desirable as collector cars. 1970, and 1979 are marginal, depending on the engine. The mid 1970′s are not so collectable (except for a small group of fanatics, who love them) Newer Mustangs are safer,of course.
71 to 73 are the Big Mustangs, 74 to 78 are the infamous Mustang II’s and 79 was the first year of the Fox and Motor Trends Car of the Year and the Indy 500 Pace Car..
i have a 1970 mustang grande she has a 302 that me and my dad rebuilt and i must say she is fast haha depending on what u need it can be expensive but then again cars in general are expensive mustangs frm that era arent that hard to find in a 3 block area there is 3 mustangs frm that year and one of those mustangs is mine i see them every were but i live in california so idk if it makes a diff or not
In good shape they are great cars.
Mustangs have a cult following. One that involves an alphabet soup of letters and numbers that enthusiasts, hobbyists ans collectors know at a glance. CJ for example or the coveted "Shelby" mustangs.
You aren’t too likely to just come across a drive able example of a 70s Mustang that’s "For Sale" at anything approaching a bargain.
Hard to find ? Not if you know where to look. Mustang clubs, rallies and events, Car shows or cruise nights all have Mustangs for sale.
Expect to pay in the 10s of thousands of dollars for a completed project or 10s of thousands to have a project completed for you.
I have a 72 mach 1, and it’s a great looking car. Though it is modified…mainly out of neccessity really. It has a 351 Cleveland which usually would mean good HP, but they started decreasing HP in the 70′s to meet pollution controls. As it turns out the 1972 351C only had about 170 HP stock. (though ours is probably back around 300)
We originally bought it for about 3K in running but rough shape, and probably put about 10-12K into it to get it to it’s current state (though we still have a few jobs to do on it)

Though I can’t really say anything about the notchbacks or the convertibles, what I can tell you about the cars is this one,being the fastback body style, has the rear window angled @ about 14 degrees, meaning you can’t see s*** out the back. So I usually have someone watching/guiding me if I have to reverse the thing. Also the stock power steering is super light, there is a lot of play in the steering wheel.Though you can adjust it, it’s not really a good handling car, though I guess it turns fairly well.
Also combined w/ the fact that you sit really low down in the car w/ the rear window still being useless I personally don’t and wouldn’t use it as a daily driver. Mainly due to the design flaws and the fact that even the most powerful stock motor for the cars was still pretty weak for such heavy cars. It’s almost a given you’ll have to spend a good amount of money on them to get them anything close to what you would probably call "driveable"
As for being hard to find, they are a bit rare, not impossible to find but there’s a million more 60′s stangs out there than 70′s since no one ever viewed them as cool/worth saving. (though they are just starting to become collectible now)
Also any early 70′s stangs you do find, will most likely be 73′s, For whatever reason there just seem to be a lot more of them than the 71-72 which of course were even less powerful than previous models.
As for the rest of the 70′s unless you’re talking 79, you can skip the M2′s (since those are universally lame cars). And if you’re looking at 79, you might as well look for an 80′s F-body since those will probably be easier to find
