Will $2500 buy me a 1970s car fit to drive across America? What should I be looking for?

A mate and I will be driving from LA to NY in January 2008, and want to do it in a 1970s American car. There are a few on Craig’s List, but I really want to know if this 00 price will buy us something that’ll go the distance. We’re not bothered about having something in great condition, but we don’t want to spend the whole time in a garage. Which 1970s cars are most reliable? Have the cheapest parts? I’m from the UK, so don’t really know much about American cars, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don’t know if I would try to buy a ’70′s car just to do a cross country trip. Your best bet would be to find a "grandma" car. You know, one that was owned by a little old lady and garage kept for 30 years. They are still around. Stick with Fords or Chevys. If you find a good one go ahead and replace the belts, tires and hoses. Good luck.
